Virginia Cox

Virginia M. Cox, 80, of Clearfield, formerly of Hamilton, Ohio passed away from a sudden illness at St. Claire Regional Hospital in Morehead, KY on Sunday, November 8, 2015.

She was born Virginia McClain on July 2, 1935, in Clearfield, KY, where her husband was also born, and where they later retired to in 1993.  Virginia’s husband, Franklin D. Cox, whom she married on July 12, 1954, preceded her in death on February 14, 2007.

Virginia was active in several organizations while living in Ohio. In 1979, she was honored to be named the Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Hamilton/Fairfield Jaycees.  During her retirement, she was active in her church, Clearfield Baptist, as well as the Red Hatters, the Morehead Golden Agers, and the Morehead Mountain Strings Dulcimer Club.  She loved gardening and working outdoors, and maintained a hummingbird habitat for many years.

In addition to her husband, Virginia was preceded in death by her father, Chester McClain.

She is survived by a son, Larry D. Cox and wife Shon of Middletown, Ohio, and a daughter, Melissa S. Cox of Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as granddogs Maggy May and Bailey, and grandcat Toby.  She is also survived by her mother, Lesta McClain, sister Christine (Owen) Bigham, and brother James A. McClain, all of Yorktown, IN, sister-in-law Sadie (Carl) Cundiff of Clearfield, brother-in-law Lonnie Cox of Morehead, plus many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 12:00 until funeral services at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 14 at the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home, 808 Old Flemingsburg Rd, Morehead, KY, with the Rev. Mike Parr officiating.
