On August 29th 2013, Thelma Lee Black Skaggs passed away at the age of 91 at the home of her daughter in Winchester, KY.

She was born on December 18, 1921 in Rowan County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Wales and Grace Shrewsbury Black.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Murvel Black and Grover S. Black, one child, and her beloved husband of 67 years, Earl J. Skaggs.

With entrepreneurial spirit, she owned several successful businesses in Morehead. Among them were Skaggs' Drive Inn Restaurant on West Main Street and Thelma's Day Care, the first child care center in Morehead which was operational for over 20 years. Her love and care for children was her passion and she was known to all as "Mama Skaggs."

In 1975, Thelma and Earl returned to the area where she was born, Bratton Branch/Sugarloaf Mtn. There, she nurtured her other talents of gardening, sewing, oil painting, cooking and homemaking. They also pursued their love of travel, dance, farming and were active and dedicated members of the First Church of God for over 40 years.

Thelma is survived by three children, Earlene (Ron) Tompkins of Denver, CO, Ronald (Ann) Skaggs of Morehead, and Arrettia (Ishmal) Lamb of Winchester; six grandchildren, Lee and Mark Tompkins of Denver, CO, Brent Skaggs of Morehead, Keith, Amber and Hayden Lamb of Winchester; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 at the First Church of God on Sunset Lane in Morehead with Rev. Ben Tackett officiating.

Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3rd, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home in Morehead and after 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Ron Tompkins, Mark Tompkins, Brent Skaggs, Billy Vick, Zakkary Lamb, and Keith Lamb.

The family requests donations be made to Hospice East, 407 Shoppers Drive, Winchester, KY 40391.
