Mr. Robert Bates Scott, Sr. of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011, after a recent diagnosis of carcinoma of the lung.

Robert (Bob/Scotty) B. Scott was born in Edgewood, Maryland, the son of the late Evangeline Robinson Scott and Chester Minor Scott.

He grew up in Carney's Point, New Jersey, graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and earned a PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry from Northwestern University.

During his career with Hercules Powder Company (later Hercules, Inc.) he worked in Brunswick, Georgia and Wilmington, Delaware. He held various positions including Manager of the Polymers Research Division, Director of Development of the Synthetics Department, Director of Sales Development for DMT Byproducts and Director of Laboratories and Licensing for Hercules, Inc. In addition, Scotty worked on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago and Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Scotty was involved in many charitable organizations while living in St. Simons Island, Georgia including the Rotary Club, of which he was president; the Georgia Jaycees; Scoutmaster of St. Simons Island Boy Scout Troop; and vestry member of Christ Church Frederica. He continued his philanthropic work in Wilmington serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 63; Chairman of the Board of Ingleside Homes, Inc.; member of the Editorial Advisory Board of The News Journal; vestry member and Junior Warden of Christ Church Christiana Hundred; the Bishop's Warden for three bishops and one interim bishop of the Diocese of Delaware; Chairman of the Diocesan Council; Deputy to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church several times; member of the Diocesan Compensation Committee; member of the board of the Cathedral Choir School of Delaware; and member of the Advisory Board of St. Michael's School and Nursery.

Survivors include his wife Margaret Penix Scott; his son, Robert Bates Scott, Jr. and his wife, Kathy; his daughter, Ann Scott Black and her husband, Steve; his son, Thomas Stanley Scott and his wife, Betsy; his brother, James Herbert Scott and his wife, Mary Beth; his grandchildren, Robert Bates Scott, III, Lee Ann Scott, Joshua Cranston Black, Clarissa Ann Black, Clayton Douglas Scott and Alexander Young Scott; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services and burial will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 14, 2011 at the Lee Cemetery, Morehead, Kentucky, with Rev. Molly Smothers officiating.

There is no visitation.
