Mary Lewis Cornette

Mary Lewis Cornette, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on September 23, 2023, in Columbus, Ohio.

Born on May 27, 1930, Mary was the daughter of Talton (Talt)and Nancy Callie Turner (Callie) Cornette of Morehead Kentucky and sister to Lucille Jane (Lucy) Gary, Billie Ann Cornette, and Carolyn Kay Fouch, all of whom preceded her in death.

A coal miner’s daughter named after United Mine Workers union president, John L. Lewis, and true Kentucky woman, she was strong and fiercely independent. A graduate of Morehead High School, Mary lived most of her life in Morehead. Although she had several occupations over the years, she found her true calling as the Director of the Rowan County Senior Citizens organization. She devoted herself to enriching the lives of seniors in a five-county area by providing a welcoming environment, a sense of community, and opportunities to experience Kentucky at its best by attending events and festivals in the area.

She was much loved by her children, MarLee Porter of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Russell Matthew (Matt) Meadows of Columbus, Ohio. After she moved to an assisted living facility in Columbus, Matt‘s wife, Sandy, was Mary’s selfless caregiver. Mary’s granddaughter, Lindsay Meadows (Brian) Bobb, was also an ongoing source of support in those final years and was Mary’s fiercest advocate.

Mary will also be missed by her other five grandchildren, Ashley Porter (Dan) Fitzpatrick, Will Porter, Jared Meadows, Seth (Rachel) Meadows, and Leah Meadows, five great grandchildren, as well as nieces and a nephew.

As a lifelong member of Cranston Church of God, Mary shared her faith through her gift of song and her testimony of God’s transforming power in her life. She was also an extremely talented craftsperson who delighted family and friends with beautiful handmade baskets, dolls, cross stitch pictures, ceramics, and woodworking.

Mary will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 30, 2023 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Morehead with Rev. Lowell Rice officiating.

Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is after 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
