Mr. James Monroe "Roe" Horton, Jr. Age 89 of Morehead, passed away Friday evening, July 20, 2012 in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born March 3, 1923 in Wrigley, Kentucky to the late James Monroe and Nola Barker Horton.

Roe was a retired construction worker and former employee of Kingsford Charcoal Company. He was of the church of God faith, a lifetime member of the American Legion, enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors.

Ruth and Roe were well known throughout the area for singing at many funerals, church services and revivals.

A U.S. Army veteran having served during WWII, Roe was a member of the First Ranger Battalion, later named Darby's Rangers and was a Prisoner of War for over 15 months.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son Billy Horton, two daughters, Rita Faye Horton and Gerri Horton, Five brothers, Roy Horton, Darris Horton, Walter Horton, Clarence Horton and Talmadge Horton. Three sisters, Edna Thompson, Blanche Hamm and Elva Dyer.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruth Evans Horton. Two sons, Marty (Carrie) Horton of Morehead and Danny Horton of Louisville, Kentucky.

Three daughters, Judy Jessing of Braselton, Georgia, Debbie (Freddy) Armstrong of Morehead and Joy (Tim) Tackett of Ashland. A very dear friend, who he loved as a daughter, Vanessa (James) Fannin of Morehead.

One sister, Lucy Butler of Pendleton, Indiana. Seven Grandchildren and Seventeen Great-Grandchildren. Also, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Don Rivers and Lloyd Dean officiating.

Burial with full military honors by the Morehead American legion Post No. 126 will follow in the New Sill Cemetery at Haldeman.

Visitation at Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home is after 5:00 P.M. Monday.

Contributions are suggested to the Morehead American Legion Post No. 126 Building Fund.

Casket Bearers will be Joe Tackett, Chris Tackett, Jason Armstrong, Tammy Cates, Justin Horton, Kalie Horton, Heather Baird, Tim Tackett and Gary Messer.

Honorary Bearers will be members of the Morehead American Legion Post No. 126
