Betty "Vernie" Johnson

Mrs. Betty Jean “Vernie” McDaniel Johnson, 81, of Brown Ridge, Morehead, passed away Saturday evening, May 2, 2015 at her home after an illness of several weeks.

She was born on June 25, 1933 in Elliott County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late William and Ann LeMaster McDaniel.

Mrs. Johnson was retired from Morehead State University, where she had been a baker in the Cornucopia Room.

Vernie was a member of Beartown Church of God and she enjoyed playing card games, working puzzle books, listening to bluegrass and gospel music, watching the WLJC program and U.K. basketball.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Argus “Bill” Johnson, who passed away on July 15, 1994, five brothers, Arnold McDaniel, Harshel McDaniel, Dempsey McDaniel and infants, Hess and Audie and five sisters, Sarah Quesinberry, Dixie Lowe, Maxie Mabry, Lucy Mabry and Faye Kilgore.

Survivors include one son, Nicky (Audrey) Johnson of Elliottville, two daughters, Darlene (Eddie) Ray of McDaniel Ridge, Elliott County and Vivian (Dalmas) Wagoner of Brown Ridge, Morehead, seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Alan) Evans, Dean (Zainab) Johnson, Tina (Joe) Stevens, Austin Johnson, Luke Skinner, Vanessa (Justin) Wagoner and Michael (Kayla) Skinner, six great-grandchildren, Audrey Evans, Carter Stevens, Davin Skinner, Liam Skinner, Jamison Wagoner and Jaylin Wagoner, one sister, Dora LeMaster of Elliottville, two sisters-in-law, June McDaniel of Elliott County and Agatha Waugh of Huntington, West Virginia, very close friend, Valerie Mayse of Morehead and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 6, 2015 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home with Pastor Andy Lands and Rev. Elijah Wagoner officiating.

Burial will follow in the McDaniel Cemetery in Elliott County.

Visitation is after 7:00 P.M. Monday and anytime Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Talmadge Mabry, Raymond McDaniel, Don Alton LeMaster, Gene Lowe, Versel Dillon, Brian Dillon, Randy Holbrook and Billy McDaniel.
