Gertrude Irene Gilbert of CCC Trail, Morehead, was born on April 16th, 1929. She was the eldest of 13 children born to Davis and Myrtle (Lambert) Kidd of Morehead, KY.
On August 5, 1950, she married Merl H. Gilbert in Washington D.C just before the two embarked on a journey with the US Air Force where Merl worked in Special Investigations.
They had two children; Sandra (Sandy) Gilbert Clayton and Loren Gilbert.
The family lived in England, Germany, and various states before returning to Morehead upon retirement. They operated Gilbert’s Fruit Farm until Merl’s passing in 1987.
Loren, who passed in June 2019, was married to Gisele King Gilbert, had one daughter, Stephanie, son-in-law Russell Purvis, and two grandchildren (Lexan and Luke).
Sandy was married to Tom P. Clayton until his passing, and then Sam Phipps until her death in May 2010.
Sandy and Tom had three daughters; Kristen, Jill, and Katherine, with whom Gertrude had an extraordinary bond. She was the glue that held them together, supported unconditionally, and loved endlessly. After the passing of their parents, she filled and exceeded every role.
Being a great-grandmother was a role she treasured. Kristen has one son, Nathaniel, and Katherine and husband Kevin Holbrook have two children, Kaegan and Kadia. Though her relationship with all was special, her time with the eldest, Nate, was considered one her favorite blessings in life.
Gertrude was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making clothes and household items for herself and family. She enjoyed keeping her house and lawn pristine and beautiful. She loved to cook and bake, especially when she had group of loved ones around her table.
After a life lived long and well, she passed away in the company of her grandchildren on November 23. 2019.
