Charles Conn

Charles E. Conn, age 75, passed from this earthly life, at his home in Morehead, surrounded by his immediate family on May 1, 2019.

Born April 5, 1944 in Fleming County, he was the youngest child of Martin Luther and Martha Lee Brittain Conn.    He started his formal education at Goddard School before moving with his family to Rowan County.

A beloved husband and father, Charley is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy Jewell (Mattox) Conn and their daughter, Carrie Elizabeth Conn Brown (Drew) of Lexington.

Charley was a US Army Veteran, serving in the 510th Engineer Company where he received four service medals and a letter of appreciation for performance of duty in the highest tradition of the Corps of Engineers.   He served March 24, 1966 to March 20, 1967 at Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam, where he was repeatedly exposed to Agent Orange which was ultimately determined to have caused the conditions leading to his death.

Charley was a life long Methodist and a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church.    After 31 years of loyal employment, he retired in 2006 from Emerson Electric.   He and his wife, Nancy, founded and for several years operated Conn’s Refinishing in Morehead.

He was an early and longtime member of the Rowan County Wildlife Club, an avid Morehead State University basketball fan, a lover of nature, antiques and his dogs.

In addition to his wife, daughter and son-in-law, Charley is survived by a sister, Ruby L. Petitt, a network of in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends.    He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lucy Emmons and one brother, Jamie L. Conn.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, May 3, 2019 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Morehead with Pastor Aaron Mansfield officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fleming County Cemetery.

Full military rites will be conducted at the gravesite by the W. N. Fant American Legion Post No. 5 and the Franklin Sousley VFW Post No. 1834.

Visitation is after 11:00 A.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Morehead United Methodist Church, 227 West Main St. Morehead, KY 40351.
